Luke 9 & 10
Read Luke 9 & 10 and meet in your Good Soil Group by Sun, Feb 12.
Remember: Formation, not information. Luke and Acts invite us to live differently than the world around us. Focus on the seeds of trust, hope, and compassion God is planting.
Reading
As you read, here are a few things to notice, in addition to everything you notice naturally.
These are sending chapters. First, the 12 (“apostle” literally means “sent one”), then, the 72. After the teaching and on-the-job training program of chapters 5 to 8, Jesus sends the disciples out on their own.
Compare the instructions Jesus gives the 12 and the 72. Jesus seems emphatic that they rely completely on God’s providence and on the hospitality of strangers (carry nothing, eat what they give you, stay in one place). Jesus also prepares them to respond firmly but graciously to rejection (shake off the dirt, but don’t change the message, don’t call down fire).
In the same way, God sends us from worship. “Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God!” Imagine going like the 12 and the 72 went. What would it be like to live Monday to Saturday obeying the spirit of Jesus’ instructions?
Meeting
Getting to Know Each Other (10 min): You might ask each other, “Who would you say Jesus is?” Don’t worry about your answer being “right.” Simply try to describe who Jesus is for you.
Or you could tell each other stories of being sent. Who sent you? To do what? What did you take with you? What did you bring home?
Talking about Luke (20 min): Here’s some good starting questions for any week, “What did God do in these chapters? What did people do?” You also might ask each other, “What in these chapters did I welcome? What did I resist? How was Jesus freeing me as I read?”
Praying (15 min): Start this time by asking, “Who or what do we have to pray about today?” Don’t censor yourself. Nothing is too big or too small to pray about. And no one is beyond God’s care. If nothing else, pray for each other and for all of the other Good Soil groups that God will open us to the seed of God’s Word.
